How VITA Can Help You
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an IRS-sponsored program that works with non-profit organizations to provide FREE basic income tax return preparation for qualified individuals. VITA uses IRS-certified volunteers to prepare an accurate, professional return that includes electronic filing of both federal and state returns.
Are You Eligible for VITA?
The (VITA) program generally offers free tax help to these qualified individuals:
- People making $64,000 or less in annual income
- Persons with disabilities
- Senior citizens
- Limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns
NOTE: First Shiloh Baptist Church Tax Services is now part of the BFNC Tax Program. VITA-eligible prior clients are welcome.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The Earned Income Tax Credit is a benefit for working people with low to moderate income. To qualify, workers and families must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if they do not owe any tax or are not required to file. EITC reduces the amount of tax owed and may provide a refund. (Source: IRS)
Each year, thousands of qualifying Americans fail to claim the EITC on their federal income tax returns, meaning billions of dollars in much-needed refunds goes unclaimed. Learn how to navigate the tax preparation process and ensure YOU are getting your full return.
According to the IRS, to qualify for the EITC, earned income must be less than:
- $59,899 ($66,819 if married and filing jointly) if you have 3 or more children*
- $55,768 ($62,688 if married and filing jointly) if you have 2 children*
- $49,084 ($56,004 if married and filing jointly) if you have 1 child*
- $18,591 ($25,511 if married and filing jointly) if you have no children*
*Children must meet certain relationship, age, and residency requirements to qualify.
